I am afraid that's not possible. That current is required for the proper functionality of the gauge.
To detect the device is in sleep mode, you need to connect an ammeter to measure the current. If one of the conditions for sleep mode is met, eg, current =0 and you send the command 11 to put the device into sleep, you should then disconnect the usb from your computer to ensure your smbus lines are pulled low, wait for about one minute, you will see the current drop from ~550 uA to about 52uA (this indicates you are now in sleep mode.). This is if your charge and discharge fets were intially off. The sleep mode current will be higher if you had one or both fets on. .
