Forum Post: LMZ12002 Usage Questions

Hello

I'll start this post off by saying that this is the first time I've ever used a switch mode power supply/regulator, I've mostly been using LDO regulators but for my recent project I wanted to use a much more efficient power supply. I'm looking at using the LMZ12002 2A Simple Switcher and just have a few questions about the usage and design side, here are my questions;

  1. Just like any other power supply I have used can I use the EN pin to enable/disable the power supply either by pulling the pin LOW to disable power and pulling the pin HIGH to enable power ? (This maybe a stupid question but the datasheet is not black and white on this one)
  2. Is it a good idea to add a filter or even a LDO regulator to keep the output ripple at bay, so there is low amounts of noise on my power rail?
  3. What would be the preferred method of doing this:(Regarding the question above).

System notes:

Input Max Voltage= 13V (12V Normal) (PSU 1 and PSU 2)

Output Voltage= 3.3V (PSU 1) and 5V (PSU 2)

Max Current Output= 1.2A (PSU 1) and 1.8A (PSU 2)

There will be two LMZ12002 used in my system the first one will be ON constantly (3.3V Output) which will supply the main system IC's and microcontrollers and the second one will be controlled by a microcontroller to control the power for the device charging and external power (5V Output).

I Hope Someone Can Help :)
