Hi Rico,

The values of the resistors and caps are in the recommended operating conditions of the document which you attached. Pg 3. The balancing current is dependent on how much additional load which the balancing current adds to the system that your application would tolerate and how much charge hours you want for the balancing to be complete. eg. balancing your cells (3600 mAh), if there is a 10% SOC difference with a balance current of 15mA will yield => 3600 mAH x 10% / 15 mA x D. D which is the duty equals 0.4 for most of our devices that have cell balancing as a feature. This will yield 60 hours of charge time. If greater than 15 mA is needed to reduce the charge time needed for balancing to complete, then you will require the external transistors, but bear in mind that  you will be increasing the loading of the system.
